Understanding the Bible

1. Key to Understanding the Bible
   • The key to understanding the Bible is recognizing to whom a particular Scripture is written and not confusing Israel with the Church. God was careful in separating the two, and we should be as well.
   • "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15) (너는 진리의 말씀을 올바로 나누어, 하나님께 인정받는 일꾼으로 부끄러울 것이 없는 자로 자신을 드리기를 힘쓰라.)
2. God's Consistency
   • God does not change; the God of Israel in Genesis is still the same God today. However, He deals with us, the Church, under different circumstances.
   • "For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6) (나 주는 변하지 아니하나니 그러므로 야곱의 자손들아 너희가 소멸되지 아니하느니라.)
3. The Church Age Believer
   • For the Church Age believer, God speaks through the Apostle Paul's writings. Many things applicable to Israel are not to the Church today.
   • "But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter." (Romans 7:6) (이제는 우리가 법에서 벗어났으니 이는 우리가 붙들렸던 것에 대하여 죽었기 때문이라. 그러므로 우리는 영의 새로움으로 섬기며, 글자의 낡음으로 아니하느니라.)
4. Salvation Through Christ
   • We are to believe for our salvation that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again.
   • "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) (내가 받은 것을 먼저 너희에게 전하였노니, 이는 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리 죄들을 위하여 죽으시고, 장사되셨다가 성경대로 셋째 날에 다시 살아나셨으며,)
5. God's Attitude Toward Sin
   • God's attitude toward sin and righteousness has not changed.
   • "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23) (죄의 삯은 사망이요, 하나님의 선물은 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통한 영원한 생명이니라.)
6. Historical Changes in God's Dealings
   • God has changed His dealings with humanity throughout history, but He Himself has not changed.
   • "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." (Hebrews 13:8) (예수 그리스도는 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하시니라.)
7. From Adam to Moses
   • From Adam to Moses, God's dealings with humanity changed significantly, particularly with the introduction of the Law.
   • "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." (Galatians 3:24) (그러므로 율법은 우리를 그리스도께로 인도하는 초등교사가 되어 우리로 하여금 믿음으로 말미암아 의롭게 되게 하려 함이니라.)

   • Living under the Mosaic Law was burdensome, with severe penalties for transgressions.

   • The Apostle Paul proclaimed that we are not under Law but under Grace, a revolutionary message for both Jews and Gentiles.
   • "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace." (Romans 6:14) (죄가 너희를 지배하지 못하리니, 이는 너희가 법 아래 있지 아니하고 은혜 아래 있음이라.)
10. Separation of Law and Grace
    • Understanding the Bible involves separating Law and Grace, as they do not mix.

14. The New Covenant
    • The New Covenant, established through Jesus Christ, offers a new relationship with God based on faith and grace.
    • "But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises." (Hebrews 8:6) (그러나 이제 그분께서는 더 나은 사역을 얻으셨으니, 이는 그분께서 더 나은 약속들 위에 세워진 더 나은 언약의 중재자이시기 때문이라.)
15. The Importance of Context
    • Understanding the context of Scripture is crucial for proper interpretation and application.
